Glycerin and Leather: Friend or Foe?

Some contradictions just stick around. Things that don't quite add up at first glance, yet have nestled themselves into everyday habit for years. Glycerin in leather care is one of those cases. An ingredient that attracts and holds onto moisture, applied to a material we've learned doesn't handle moisture well at all. So what's going on? And why do so many people — ourselves included, at times — still reach for glycerin when it comes to caring for leather?

We dug into this question. Not just out of curiosity, but because at LISS Products we always want to understand what we use. Not just the what, but the why.

The origin of leather: a once-living material

Leather is special. It's an animal product, carrying the traces of a life that came before it. Every fold, every texture tells a story. But once leather is no longer part of a living organism, it loses its ability to repair itself. It's no longer alive, but it's still sensitive — sensitive to drying out, cracking, mold, sun, heat, and yes, moisture too.

When Lissie first cleaned her saddle, she used a leather soap borrowed from a stable mate. She caught a hint of lemon, but also something heavier, something a bit sticky. "Glycerin soap," her stable mate said. "It keeps your saddle supple." It was one of those traditions passed down without much question. But why, exactly?

What does glycerin actually do?

Glycerin is a colorless, syrupy liquid that occurs naturally in vegetable oils and animal fats. Its claim to fame is its ability to attract and hold onto moisture. In skincare, glycerin is often praised: it helps keep skin hydrated, supple, and soft.1

In that light, it doesn't seem unreasonable to use glycerin on leather too. After all, we often say leather "needs to stay supple." And that sounds like something that requires moisture, right?

But this is where the confusion starts. Because unlike skin, leather no longer has a living system that regulates moisture naturally. If we apply moisture — or an ingredient that attracts moisture — where does that moisture actually come from? And what does it do once it's there?

Leather and moisture: a delicate balance

Leather is indeed naturally oiled. During the tanning process, fats and oils are added that keep the material supple.2 These oils essentially replace the natural fat layer the hide once had.

Moisture, on the other hand, is a bit of an intruder. When leather gets too wet — through prolonged exposure to water or humidity, for example — problems can arise: the material can grow mold, swell, or stiffen once it dries.3 That's why we carefully dry and re-treat leather after a rainy ride.

And that's where glycerin trips itself up. Because while it can give leather a nice shine and a smooth surface in the short term, it also draws moisture in from the surrounding air.4 In a dry room, that might not have much effect. But in a damp stable, an unheated tack room, or just a barn in autumn? Then the leather holds onto that moisture — not nourished from within, but kept damp from the outside. And that's not care, that's a burden.

Short-term shine, long-term damage?

Let's be honest: glycerin gets results. A saddle or bridle polished with glycerin soap instantly looks better. The surface shines, feels smooth, and often smells fresh. That's exactly why so many people stick with it.

But it's a bit like polishing tired shoes with a quick spray: the outside looks better, while the inside stays thirsty. Glycerin doesn't nourish. It doesn't provide what leather truly needs — protection, depth, care that goes further than the surface.5

So what does work?

What leather needs isn't moisture, but stability. Not something that temporarily smooths the surface, but something that strengthens it from within. That's why we take a different approach: a combination of thorough cleaning and deep-working impregnation.

Our LISS Cleaner is formulated without glycerin, specifically to prevent moisture from the air being locked into the leather. Instead, we use PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil — a plant-derived ingredient that acts as a surfactant, effectively loosening dirt and grease without drying out or damaging the leather.6

After cleaning comes care with LISS Care — an impregnation that soaks deep into the leather and does its work there. It nourishes the fibers from within, while at the same time laying down a protective layer against moisture, dirt, and outside influences.7 No residue, no shine that distracts from the essence, just quiet protection you only notice once you stop using it.

Sometimes we look at an old leather halter in the cupboard and see the marks of years gone by. No shine, no perfection, but character. And then we wonder: do we want that leather to gleam like a mirror? Or do we want it to live, to breathe, to serve the connection between human and horse?

So... is glycerin wrong?

No. Glycerin isn't "bad." As with many things, it comes down to how you use it. Every now and then, as part of a broader care routine, it can be fine — especially if the leather is properly wiped down and cared for afterwards. But as the only product? Then it's missing what leather really needs.
